The St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners and the Environmental Resources Department will host a grand opening / ribbon cutting for the county’s newest environmental preserve, Lake Indrio Preserve, on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at 10:00 AM.
Located in northern St. Lucie County, off U.S. 1 across from FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Lake Indrio Preserve boasts gorgeous, newly built amenities for picnicking, fishing, kayaking and spending time in the outdoors. The entrance leads to a pavilion and a pedestrian boardwalk connecting to an upland island that beckons visitors to explore. Visitors can fish (catch and release) from the old sand mind lake from the 16 x 20 foot observation deck and fishing pier.
Light refreshments and optional guided excursions will be offered at this grand opening. Guests are encouraged to arrive early and park at the Indrio Savannahs Preserve parking lot, located at 5275 Tozour Road, where a shuttle will provide transportation to the new preserve area.
Lake Indrio Preserve encompasses roughly seven acres and connects to a larger complex of preserves totaling more than 250 acres called “Harbor Branch Preserve” that consists of this site, the 13-acre “Lakela’s Mint Preserve” between U.S. 1 and Old Dixie Highway and the remaining 230 acres east of Old Dixie Highway that extends to the Indian River Lagoon. Lake Indrio also connects to the 297-acre Indrio Savannahs Preserve to the south.
This property was purchased through a multi-agency acquisition partnership between the Florida Division of State Lands, Florida Communities Trust and St. Lucie County’s voter-approved environmentally significant lands bond.
St. Lucie County manages more than two dozen preserves on roughly 12,000 acres that are open to the public for passive recreation. For more information about St. Lucie County’s environmentally significant lands visit: www.stluciepreserves.com.
