Children’s and family activities for October include:
- S.T.E.A.M. Power! Explore the world of science, technology, engineering, art & math in a storytime. Most suited for students in kindergarten through 5th grade.
- Lakewood Park Branch on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 4:30 p.m.
- Lewis Branch on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 10:30 a.m.
- Hurston Branch on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m.
- Morningside Branch on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
- Spy Society on Thursdays, Oct. 5 & 19 at 4 p.m. at the Hurston Branch. Come train to be a secret agent by participating in fun activities and brain games. Best suited for students in grades 4 and up.
- Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, Oct. 7 anytime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Lewis Branch. Can you find all the clues? Drop in and give it a try.
- Kids Crafternoon on Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Lewis Branch. All materials supplied. Best suited for students in grades 3-8.
- Bilingual Storytime (Tiempo de Cuentos) on Friday, Oct. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lewis Branch. Enjoy a bilingual story time in both English and Spanish. Most suited for ages 3-5 years.
- Lego at the Library on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Lewis Branch. Create with Lego blocks at the library. Pictures of all creations will be displayed. Best suited for elementary-age students.
- Not So Spooky Storytime on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Morningside Branch. Join the library staff for spooky, not-too-scary stories, songs, rhymes, crafts and fun. Costumes are welcome.
- Family Crafternoon on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Hurston Branch. A variety of supplies will be provided along with several project ideas. All ages welcome.
- Minecraft Mania on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Hurston Branch. Complete challenges and explore new worlds with Minecraft EDU. Best suited for students in grades 4 and up.
- Smash Bros. Switch Tournament on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. at the Kilmer Branch. Test your skills against others in the Smash Brothers Ultimate. Suitable for ages 8 to 18.
Movies
- “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023) on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Lewis Branch. After a bite from a radioactive spider, Miles Morales becomes “the one and only Spider-Man.” When a dimensional gateway opens, Miles soon realizes he isn't the only spider superhero as he meets many different versions of Spiderman from other universes, including the original Peter Parker. This animated feature is rated PG with a running time of 117 minutes.
- “The Little Mermaid” (2023) on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2:30 p.m. at the Morningside Branch. Ariel, a mermaid princess, is curious about all things human. Ariel asks sea witch Ursula to take her voice in exchange for legs, as this is the only way she could explore the human world of Eric, her love interest. Her frustrated father, King Triton, is worried. But her trusted sea creature friends Flounder and Sebastian still watch over her. This Disney, live-action remake is rated PG with a running time of 120 minutes.
- “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023) on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lewis Branch. With help from Princess Peach, Mario gets ready to square off against the all-powerful Bowser to stop his plans from conquering the world. This animated feature is rated PG with a running time of 92 minutes.
- “Scooby-Doo in Where’s My Mummy?” (2005) on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lewis Branch. Scooby-Doo and the gang run for their mummies as ancient mysteries unravel. Archaeologist and super sleuth Velma is in Egypt for the unveiling ceremony of the restored Sphinx - a mysterious mythical creature with the head of a man and the body of a lion - only to discover a hidden tomb belonging to Cleopatra herself. This animated feature has a running time of 74 minutes.
Teens and Teens
- Anime Multimedia Club on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 4:15 p.m. at the Morningside Branch. The fall anime season is about to begin. Join the club to watch trailers for upcoming shows and pick your most anticipated fall anime. This program is best suited for students in grades 6-12.
- Dungeons & Dragons on Fridays, Oct. 13 and 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lewis Branch. Players gather for adventures across fantastical worlds. Best suited for ages 11 – 18.
- Making Soap on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lewis Branch. Enjoy an afternoon of making soap. All materials supplied. Best suited for ages 11 – 18.
- Teen/Tween Crafternoon on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at Morningside Branch. Join us for a fun-filled crafternoon at the library. A variety of supplies will be provided, along with several project ideas. You can follow along with a new craft or work on your own project. So, get your creative juices flowing and enjoy a Tuesday crafternoon with us.
- Tween/Teen Game Day on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the Lakewood Park Library. Have a blast competing against others on the Nintendo Switch.
- Teen Video Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Lewis Branch. Pokken on Switch - who will be victorious? Best suited for ages 11 – 18.
- Teen Crafternoon on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. at the Hurston Branch. Bring your crafting skills and join us in making an autumn-themed mason jar lantern. Perfect for fall decorating.
- Teen/Tween Crafternoon on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 4:30 p.m. at the Lakewood Park Branch. Get creative and make your own special dot painting. All supplies provided. Best suited for ages 10 and older.
- Learn How to Draw Comics on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Lewis Branch. The first of a three-part series. All materials supplied. Best suited for ages 11 – 18.
Weekly Programs
- Just Baby & Me on Tuesdays (two sessions) at 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the Lewis Branch. Songs, stories and movement fun for you and your baby. Best suited for infants up to 1 year.
- Tales & Play on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. at the Morningside Branch. Children ages 0-5 and their caregivers are invited to story time. Afterward, all are welcome to stay for some open playtime.
- Pre-school Storybook Craft at 10:30 a.m. Children ages 4 and 5 are invited to listen to stories, then join their parents and caregivers for a related craft.

- Music & Motion for Kids - Action songs, movement, singing and fun. For children younger than 6 with a caregiver.

Walk-in Programs
- Come to the Lakewood Park Branch Library and get your grab n’ go activity bag or stay and try to find all the hidden monsters in a fun-filled scavenger hunt. All month long for all ages.
- Tween Tech Challenge at the Lakewood Park Branch. The Tween Tech Challenge is a chance to test your skills with computers and technology. This self-guided challenge takes about an hour to complete and can be done at your leisure. Go it alone or work together to master this month’s challenge.
- Create a Fall Bookmark at the Lakewood Park Branch. Come to the library and get creative with fall bookmarks. All supplies provided.
