Celebrate National Honeybee Day 2023 With a Free Honey Tasting, 8/18

August 9, 2023

Have you ever wanted to experience the different tastes of locally sourced honey? UF/IFAS Extension St. Lucie County and the St. Lucie County Code Compliance staff are offering the perfect opportunity with a FREE “Honey Tasting Event” on Friday August 18, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Registration is NOT required.

This event will be hosted by UF/IFAS Natural Resources Extension Agent Ken Gioeli, Kate Rotindo, Urban Horticulture Extension Agent, and Dr. Nicole Quinn, Assistant Professor specializing in Entomology and Nematology.

It might surprise you to know honeybees are not actually native to Florida.  They originated from Europe but many of our most important crops benefit from bee pollination. Pollination occurs when bees forage for nectar on a variety of flowers. Along the way, they pick up pollen on their bodies and carry the pollen from one flower to another. We rely on them to pollinate some of our most important crops including citrus, avocado, watermelon, mangoes and much more. From an environmental perspective, our native flowering trees and wildflowers greatly benefit from bee pollination. Flavors of honey vary greatly depending on the flowers the bees visit. Locally sourced orange blossom honey is a delicacy with a distinctive delicious taste.
