St. Lucie County Libraries Host Events for the Whole Family

With students out of school for winter break, St. Lucie County Libraries have plenty of programs and activities to keep families engaged and involved.

Children and family activities for December 2022 include:  

  • S.T.E.A.M. Power! Explore the world of science, technology, engineering, art & math in a storytime. Most suited for students kindergarten through 5th grade.
    • Lakewood Park Branch – Thursday, December 1st at 3:30 PM
    • Morningside Branch - Saturday, December 3rd at 2:30 PM
    • Hurston Branch - Saturday, December 3rd at 3:00 PM
    • Lewis Branch - Saturday, December 10th at 2:30 PM

  • Movie Matinees
    • Minions: The Rise of Gru” (2022) - Saturday, December 3rd at 2:30 PM at the Lewis Branch. In the 1970s, 12-year-old Gru schemes and plots (with the help of the Minions) to become a member of the Vicious 6, an infamous group of supervillains. Chaos, adventure and hilarity ensue after he manages to steal a valuable object from their headquarters. This animated film is rated PG with a running time of 90 minutes.

    • "Elf" (Interactive Movie) - Saturday, December 10th at 2:30 PM at the Morningside Branch. Participate in a paper snowball fight, while the characters on the screen are having one, enjoy delicious treats when the characters are snacking, make decorations while Buddy decorates the store and more. The movie, featuring Will Farrell, is rated PG with a running time of 97 minutes.

    • "The Grinch” (2018) - A grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville. This live-action feature, based on the classic Dr. Seuss story, is rated PG with running time of 85 minutes.

      • Tuesday, December 27th at 2:30 PM at the Lewis Branch

  • Holiday Gift Station - Wednesdays, December 7th, 14th, and 21st at 3:00 PM at the Hurston Branch. Students can create homemade gifts for family and friends. Supplies and gift wrap provided. Best suited for grades K-5.

  • Bilingual Storytime - Friday, December 18th at 10:30 AM at the Lewis Branch.  Enjoy a bilingual storytime in both English and Spanish. Most suited for ages 3-5 years.

  • Elf Yourself - Transform yourself into an elf with this fun craft. Supplies will be provided. Best suited for grades K-5.
    • Tuesday, December 20th at 10:30 AM at the Hurston Branch 
    • Tuesday, December 20th at  2:00 PM at the Kilmer Branch

  • Winter Break Scavenger Hunt - Tuesday, December 20th at Morningside Branch. Families are invited to partake in an all-day holiday scavenger hunt. Visit the Children’s Desk for a prize once completed.

  • Family Fun Day on Tuesday, December 20th at 3:30 PM at the Lakewood Branch. Join the library staff for some outer space fun, including flying saucers and K’nex.

  • Kids Crafternoon - Tuesday, December 20th at 4:00 PM at the Lewis Branch. Designed for students in grades 3-8, families can enjoy an afternoon making festive holiday decorations. All materials supplied.

  • Coding with Botley - Tuesday, December 27th at 10:30 AM at the Hurston Branch. Give coding a try with Botley, which provides a hands-on, 100%-screen-free approach to coding basics. Best suited for grades one and up.

  • New Year’s Craft - Tuesday, December 27th at 2 PM at the Kilmer Branch. Celebrate 2023 with a New Year’s craft at the library. This will be a bold and bright craft, just like the start of your new year.

  • LEGO Challenge - Have fun building with Legos. Supplies provided.
    • Tuesday, December 27th at 3:30 PM at the Lakewood Park Branch.
    • Thursday, December 29th at 10:30 AM at the Morningside Branch.

  • Kids Holiday Craft - Wednesday, December 28th at 2:30 PM at the Lewis Branch. Make New Year’s Wish Jars. All materials supplied. Best suited for grades 3-8.

  • Kwanzaa Craft - Wednesday, December 28th at 3:00 PM at the Hurston Branch. Celebrate Kwanzaa with a beaded craft. Supplies will be provided. Best suited for grades K-5.


Walk-In Programs

  • The Library offers resources and materials to help you, your family or classroom every step of the way with Storytime-to-Go Kits. Families and educators can obtain everything needed for a great at-home or classroom program. Six popular early literacy themes: ABCs, 123s, colors, transportation, farm and dinosaurs.   • Stop by the Lakewood Park Branch all month long for a grab n’ go craft or scavenger hunt.

Tweens and Teens

  • Tween Game Day - Tuesday, December 13th at 2:30 PM at the Lakewood Park Branch. Have a blast with Super Smash Brothers on Nintendo Switch.

  • Teen Crafternoon - Thursday, December 15th at 4:30 PM at the Lakewood Park Branch. Design an artistic mug for the holidays. Best suited for grades 5 and up. All supplies provided.

  • Holiday Craft Program-Early Release Day - Friday, December 16th at 3:00 PM at the Morningside Branch. Create your own holiday-inspired items or follow one of our craft instruction sheets with a finished sample. Best suited for grades 5 and up.

  • Mario Kart on Switch Video Game Tournament - Saturday, December 17th from 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM at the Lewis Branch. Teams gather for adventures across fantastical worlds. Best suited for ages 11 – 18

  • Dungeons and Dragons on Thursday, December 29th from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM at the Lewis Branch. Teams gather for adventures across fantastical worlds. Best suited ages 11 – 18.

  • Super Smash Bros. Tournament - Friday, December 30th at 2:00 PM at the Kilmer Branch. Test your skills in this ‘Nintendo Switch’ tournament. Many will enter, but only one will win. Best suited for grades 6 -12.

  • Get Hooked for Teens on Saturday, November 19th at 2:30 PM at the Lewis Branch. Explore the fun of crochet. Learn a new craft or brush up on old skills. All materials supplied, but you are welcome to bring your own hooks. Best suited for grades 5 and up.

  • Walk-in Programs available all month long at the Lakewood Park Branch include a tech challenge and word puzzles.

Weekly Programs

  • Family Storytime - Mondays at the Pruitt Campus Library (no storytime on December 19th and 26th). Designed for children up to age 5, but all ages are welcome.

  • Rhythm & Rhyme Storytime - Wednesdays at 10:30 AM at the Morningside Library. Early literacy through rhymes, stories, movement and more. For ages 2 1/2 years and older.

  • Storytime Jam at 10:30 AM - Clap, dance and listen to stories. For ages 3-5.
    • Tuesdays at the Lakewood Park Branch
    • Wednesdays at Kilmer Branch
    • Thursdays at the Hurston Branch
    • Fridays at the Morningside and Lewis Branches

  • Music & Motion for Kids at 10:30 AM - Action songs, movement, singing, instruments and fun for ages under 6 with a caregiver.
    • Fridays at the Lakewood Park Branch
    • Third Saturday of the month at Morningside Branch.

  • Pre-school Storybook Craft at 10:30 AM - Children ages 4 and 5 are invited to listen to stories, then join their parents and caregivers for a related craft.
    • Thursdays at the Lakewood Park Branch
    • Fridays at the Hurston Branch
