New playground equipment and new outdoor fitness equipment at Sportsman's Park, located at 201 NW Prima Vista Blvd., are now open for play. Port St. Lucie Parks & Recreation is working to fulfill the City's strategic goal to bring culture, nature and fun activities to the City.
Visitors to Sportsman's Park can now enjoy a new, state-of-the-art playground that encourages group play and coordination for children of all ages and abilities. A large, challenging climbing dome is the centerpiece of the playground, set atop the signature Port St. Lucie sunburst incorporated into new surfacing throughout for ease of mobility. There are many thrilling elements, including spinning activities, climbing, slides, swings and coordination and balance challenges.
The site also features the meeting point, a gathering spot to enjoy quiet moments or the opportunity to socialize, as well as a see-saw springer, designed with a spacious platform to allow for socializing while lying down or sitting, created to incorporate a sports theme into the playground. Also included in the playground is a new concept in swinging, called the you-and-me swing. This allows a parent or caretaker to participate in the swinging activity in a seated position facing the child to share in the thrill and bonding experience of play. The bird-nest swing, which can be used sitting, standing or laying down, is to be utilized individually or with multiple users of all abilities and is another great feature that all are sure to enjoy!
Sportsman’s Park also features a state-of-the-art outdoor fitness area that includes cardio equipment, calisthenics and space for stretching. The site offers two cardio bikes, an elliptical cross trainer and an arm bike that delivers the level of quality and impact of workout you would expect from an indoor fitness center.
All cardio equipment is Bluetooth compatible, allowing the user to connect the machine to a phone or tablet through the KOMPAN fitness app or other activity trackers. These apps can provide real-time feedback on speed, distance, cadence, watts, calories burned and time. You can also use your smart devices to manually adjust resistance (10 levels), gain access to instructional and motivational videos and store and share activity data online. The arm bike is inclusive and can be used while seated in a wheelchair for a great workout for the upper body. When the exercise is done from a standing position, it is a full body workout, engaging all large muscle groups. The resistance can adapt automatically, depending on the pedaling speed, or the user can choose to manually change the resistance on the KOMPAN app.
This playground project, funded at $732,000 in FY 20/21 #301 Parks Capital Improvement Plan, was awarded a $250,000 grant from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program, and features structures that encompasses the adventurous spirit of the City of Port St. Lucie.
