St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) is proud to announce that three of its students have been named finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Finalists include: Haley Mangio from Fort Pierce Central High School, Nicholas Demko from Lincoln Park Academy and Aidan Tambling from Treasure Coast High School.
The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Approximately 1.5 million high school students enter the program each year and about 15,000 Semifinalists are notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing annually.
All winners of the National Merit Scholarship awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments—without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. The Finalist's academic record, the PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay is evaluated.
The three seniors representing St. Lucie Public Schools were selected based on their academic achievements as well as their performance on the PSAT. Each of the SLPS Finalists have a weighted GPA well above 5.0 and will be eligible for many prestigious scholarships, which are often offered by colleges to National Merit finalists.
