SLC Reopens Two Additional Libraries, Lakewood Park & Morningside, 9/8

August 27, 2020

Beginning Tuesday, September 8, 2020, St. Lucie County will open two more libraries with expanded hours to accommodate students and adults, who need materials, Wi-Fi or computer access.

The Lakewood Park Branch, 7605 Santa Barbara Drive, Fort Pierce, and Morningside Branch, 2410 Morningside Blvd., Port St. Lucie, will join the Susan Broom Kilmer Library, 101 Melody Lane in Fort Pierce, and Paula A. Lewis Library, 2950 SW Rosser Blvd. in Port St. Lucie, in opening for walk-in visitors Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To protect both the public and our employees, libraries will:

  • Limit the number of visitors and length of time inside the facility;

  • Provide additional sanitization including computers, checkout areas and other surfaces;

  • Conduct temperature checks for all employees and visitors before entering;

  • Require visitors wear masks that cover the nose and mouth;

  • Practice social distancing;

  • Quarantine returned materials for 72 hours.

  • Return materials through the book drop;

  • Promote the use of online services.

The St. Lucie County Library System is working through a phased approach to reopen its two smaller branch libraries, the Zora Neale Hurston Branch and Port St. Lucie Branch, in late September/early October.

All six St. Lucie County Branch Libraries continue to provide curbside pickup with librarians available by phone to help customers with online checkouts.

The four branch libraries that are open offer:

  • Materials checkout;
  • Limited computer use - one session per day with library card;
  • Online services;
  • Electronic materials;
  • Wi-Fi;
  • Virtual activities;
  • Curbside holds pickup.

St. Lucie County’s Library staff are planning to offer safe programming for some of our youngest readers as early literality is important. Staff has already created a number of virtual storytimes and craft projects, which are available on demand at www.youtube.com/stluciegov.

Since COVID-19 pandemic started, the St. Lucie County Library System has added additional online resources, including ebook and free virtual learning options such as music lessons, at www.stlucieco.gov/library
