School Board Approves Return to School Options

July 8, 2020

The St. Lucie County School Board approved the Superintendent’s recommended Return to School Options during this morning’s Board Meeting.  The three options available to parents are found below.

Option 1: Traditional School

Students return to school full time, five days a week in the traditional face-to-face classroom setting with increased health and safety measures in place including:

  • Masks must be worn by students when on the bus, during transitions and anytime social distancing is not possible.

  • Frequent cleaning of surfaces, e-misting and disinfecting including routine deep cleans.

  • Hand sanitizer in every classroom and on every bus.

  • Explicit lessons in healthy habits; handwashing, cough etiquette, use of masks, social distancing and staying home when sick.

  • Increased social distancing wherever possible.

  • One-way hallways and stairwells will be used.

  • No assemblies, large gatherings, field trips or open houses

Option 2: “MySchool” On-line

“MySchool” is a new online option through a child’s assigned school. Important features of this learning environment include:

  • Online Daily Attendance Model

  • Students maintain their enrollment status at their assigned schools.

  • Students attend school online during regular school hours and follow their daily class schedule.

  • Teachers meet with students each period, daily online through Teams and Canvas.

  • Students/Teachers follow the same curriculum sequence as their peers in school and can easily return to school when comfortable. This temporary option will be re-evaluated every nine weeks.

  • Attendance will be taken each period.

  • Wrap-around support services will be provided for mental health, counseling and interventions.

  • 1 to 1 computer access for enrolled students.

  • Not an option for Voluntary Prekindergarten Program.

  • Parents must provide adult supervision and support for young children to help them navigate the on-line environment.

Option 3: Mosaic Digital Academy

  • Students may seek a transfer to Mosaic Digital Academy; the SLPS full-time Florida Virtual School (FLVS) franchise.

  • This choice requires a one-year commitment during this time due to the challenges of transferring between regular brick and mortar schools.

  • Mosaic Digital Academy follows the FLVS curriculum.

  • Parents must provide adult supervision and support for young children to help them navigate the on-line environment.

All students will automatically be enrolled in Option 1, Traditional School, unless a parent would like to select one of the virtual options. Option 2 or Option 3 are selected through the completion of the Parent Commitment Form. Parent Commitment Forms are being emailed to all parents and are also accessible through the district webpage.  Any parent needing assistance or more information can contact their child’s school directly or they can call 429-HELP(4357).
