The City of Port St. Lucie wants to help its residents get ready for the 2020 hurricane season by hosting two virtual hurricane preparedness events in July. On July 8, 2020, citizens are encouraged to chat “live” on Facebook with City officials followed by a virtual Hurricane Expo on July 11, 2020.
Join the City of Port St. Lucie on July 8, 2020, at 3 p.m. for a “Live” Facebook Hurricane Preparedness Q&A. The hour-long Facebook event will feature a brief presentation by Port St. Lucie’s Emergency Operations Administrator Christina Proulx, followed by a question and answer session with Mayor Greg Oravec. Together they’re here to answer your questions, address any concerns, and stress the importance of being proactive when it comes to hurricane preparedness. The “Live” Hurricane Q&A will be on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 3 p.m. on the City of Port St. Lucie’s Facebook Page @CityofPSL.
On Saturday, July 11, 2020, at 9 a.m., the City of Port St. Lucie has partnered with WPBF’s Meteorologist Mike Lyons, WTPV’s Meteorologist Steve Weagle, National Weather Service, Florida Power & Light, and St. Lucie County to bring its community a Virtual Hurricane Expo. The localized information will be aimed toward helping to educate the local community about the importance of preparation and planning.
“We’re taking an online approach to our annual hurricane expo, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” explains Port St. Lucie’s Emergency Operations Administrator Christina Proulx. “Instead of our in-person event, which typically hosts vendor booths related to hurricane preparedness, guest presenters, and about 3,000 attendees, we will launch a virtual expo to inform residents on how to prepare for the 2020 hurricane season in a safe and contactless manner. The Virtual Hurricane Expo will be featured on Saturday, July 11, 2020, at 9 a.m. on the City of Port St. Lucie’s Facebook Page @CityofPSL.”

An above-normal 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is expected, according to forecasters with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service. The outlook predicts a 60% chance of an above-normal season, a 30% chance of a near-normal season and only a 10% chance of a below-normal season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.
