St. Lucie County Reopens Two Libraries: Kilmer and Lewis

June 19, 2020

St. Lucie County has reopened two of its larger branch libraries with safety precautions to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The Susan Broom Kilmer Library, 101 Melody Lane in Fort Pierce, and Paula A. Lewis Library, 2950 SW Rosser Blvd. in Port St. Lucie, are now open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

To protect both the public and our employees, libraries will:

  • Limit the number of visitors and length of time inside the facility;
  • Conduct temperature checks for all employees and visitors before entering;
  • Strongly urge that visitors wear masks that cover the nose and mouth;
  • Practice social distancing;
  • Return materials through the book drop;
  • Promote the use of online services.

The two branch libraries are open with limited services including:

  • Materials checkout;
  • Limited computer use for adults- one session per day with library card;
  • Online services;
  • Electronic materials;
  • Wi-Fi;
  • Virtual activities;
  • Curbside holds pickup.

Additional safety precautions being taken including the quarantining of materials for 72 hours; additional sanitizing and protective equipment; the removal of most seating and no room rentals or magazines/newspapers.

The St. Lucie County officials will be monitoring the activities and traffic at these two branch libraries, and with input from public health officials, be making plans to open additional libraries in the future.

Since COVID-19, the St. Lucie County Library System has added additional online resources, including ebook and free virtual learning options such as music lessons, at www.stlucieco.gov/library.
