Imagine Your Story-Library’s Youth Summer Reading Program Goes Virtual

June 11, 2020

The summer reading program for teens and children sponsored by the St Lucie County Library System is underway now through Saturday, August 8, 2020. Featuring Grab-and-Go Adventure bags, virtual content and the popular online Reading Challenge, there is something going on for preschoolers to teens.

Last year, the library system had 2,252 reading participants and more than 7,000 youth attended one of 185 programs. This year, because of the Coronavirus pandemic, all programs will be held virtually.

For the younger children, storytime continues with more than a dozen story hours available online. Kids can listen again and again to engaging stories read by familiar faces.

For K-5 youth, beginning Tuesday, June 9th, families can pick up a Grab-and-Go Summer Reading Adventure bags curbside at all six branches of the library. Inside the bags you will find everything you need for Four DYI (do-it-yourself) experiences, links to virtual content and some surprises.

For grades K-12, the library has purchased multiple copies of all Sunshine State books. All titles are available both online and for curbside holds pick-up.

For youth of all ages, the library is bringing back its popular Reading Challenge. Our incentive-based challenge makes reading fun and the free digital tool provided by the library will help you keep track of your child’s reading all summer long. Complete the challenges and become eligible for prizes.

“We are excited to continue to provide the highly-anticipated summer reading program to the community,” said Susan Jacob, director of the St. Lucie County Library System. “Even in these times when we can’t open our physical spaces yet, the virtual component will allow us to connect with not only our existing patrons, but give us the opportunity to engage with the rest of the community through our online programs and services. In these uncertain times, reading alone or reading to each other can help to anchor everyone.”

The St. Lucie County Summer Reading challenge is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County.

While supplies last, Grab-and-Go Summer Adventure bags are available at every branch location. For more information visit www.stlucieco.gov/library or call Library staff at 72-462-6873.
