Oxbow Eco-Center Offers Distance Learning and Resources for Families

April 7, 2020

Since 2001, the Oxbow Eco-Center has been a trusted source for providing quality programming and engaging residents in the natural wonders of St. Lucie County. As we face the challenges of social distancing and work toward stopping the spread of COVID-19, the Oxbow has taken a new web-based approach to support the community and provide resources for adults and youth to stay mentally and physically active. Visit www.oxboweco.com for family activities, on-line trainings and tips for staying healthy through these challenging times. Simply click on the ‘Resources and Learning Opportunities’ tab and explore the resources below:

  • Oxbow Eco-Center’s new family activity guide “Ready, Set, Explore!” was created to help families make the most of outdoor discovery. It’s full of simple, but tried and true nature activities for young children.

  • Parents will also enjoy our newly curated list of environmental education resources from renowned organizations such as Leave No Trace, Cornell Lab of Ornithology and more.

  • There are plenty of opportunities for adult learners, too. Oxbow’s new distance learning platform includes pre-recorded lectures/presentations by local experts, authors and speakers from around the state.  New video trainings are in the works as well, so be sure to check the site often.

  • Become a Citizen Scientists and help monitor invasive lizards and other reptiles using your smart phone. A new Reptile Citizen Science brochure tells you how to be a scientist and collect real data that will be used by local and state biologists.

The Oxbow Eco-Center is a St. Lucie County environmental learning center and just one of two dozen preserves throughout the county. Currently preserves remain open to encourage people to spend time outside; however, social distancing and COVID-19 protocols must be practiced if visiting a preserve. It’s up to each of us to stop the spread of COVID-19. For a list of St. Lucie County’s preserves visit www.stluciepreserves.com.

For COVID-19 guidelines, visit www.cdc.gov; and for the best local information stay tuned to St. Lucie County Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or visit www.stlucieco.gov.

Managed and operated by the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners, Oxbow Eco-Center is part of the Environmental Resources Department and is located 5400 NE St. James Drive in Port St. Lucie.
