Top Teens in Saint Lucie County Honored

May 18, 2012
Going above and beyond every day has earned several local teens accolades and a handsome reward.  On Monday, May 14th, the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County held its Annual Awards Dinner to recognize local youth and mentors who are making a difference in our community.

Five teens earned this year’s Outstanding Youth Award, which comes with a $1,000 college scholarship upon graduation from high school.  Winners are nominated by the programs in which they participate for displaying exemplary leadership characteristics, achievement and volunteerism.

This year’s winners included: Erick Clemens of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Cheyenne Elms of Boys & Girls Club, Andrea Hernandez of Boys & Girls Club, Alyssa Hickey of Treasure Coast Hospice and Tiara Neal of Future Generations.

The Children’s Services Council also recognized two local child advocates for their dedication to improving the lives of children in our area. Denise Sirmons of the Lincoln Park Community Center/St. Lucie County Parks & Rec Department, and Vern Melvin, retired District Administrator of the Department of Children and Families, earned this year’s Kathryn Basile Champions for Children Award posthumously named after the Council’s longtime leader

The event, which was sponsored by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office and Post Insurance & Financial, Inc., was held at Creative Catering Banquet Hall at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott in St. Lucie West.

Children’s Services Council (CSC) is a taxing body created to generate revenue and distribute funds to support prevention-based programs for children and families. CSC of St. Lucie County has provided more than $6.5 million annually in funding to a core group of 53 St. Lucie County community programs and organizations for more than 20 years. This funding reaches over 30,000 children and families annually. The total cost for the average homeowner to support CSC is less than $25 a year.
