Morningside Library Opens “The Boxtrolls” Feb. 14

Open a different kind of box this Valentine’s as the Morningside Library presents “The Boxtrolls” (2014) as part of its Movie Matinee on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.

Featuring the voices of Ben Kingsley, Jared Harris and Nick Frost, this stop-animation film is based on the children’s novel “Here Be Monsters” by Alan Snow. It’s the story of a young orphaned boy raised by underground cave-dwelling trash collectors tries to save his friends from an evil exterminator.  The movie is rated PG with a running time of 96 minutes. Best suited for ages 5-10, moviegoers are encouraged to bring a pillow or blanket and are welcomed to bring their own snacks and drinks.

Parents are reminded that Morningside offers a host of other children’s programs for throughout the month. Parents and children can enjoy weekly storytime programs in the children’s room with music, books, creative movement and more:
  • Wednesdays, Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25 at 10:30 a.m. – Shake, Rattle & Read (ages 1-3)
  • Thursdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26 at 10:30 a.m. – Pre-K Fun (ages 3-5) 
  • Saturdays, Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 at 10:30 a.m. – Saturday Stories & More (ages 1-6)
Those looking for creative outlets for their children should check out: 
  • Friday Finger Painting on Friday, Feb. 13 at 10:30 a.m. (second Friday of each month), which allows children to explore color and shapes using finger paints. Most suited for ages 2 to 5, materials will be supplied. Children are encouraged to wear old clothes or smocks/aprons.
  • Legos at the Library on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (the third Saturday of each month), which provides children the chance to build, learn and play with tons of Legos.
  • Crafts for Kids program on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. (fourth Saturday of each month), which gives children (ages 5-10) all the necessary supplies to be creative and artistic.  
Teens are reminded that they’ve got a place to hang out, listen to music and have fun on Wednesday, Feb. 25 after early dismissal with Morningside’s Teen Scene from 2 – 4 p.m. 

All programs are free and open to the public.
