Macaroni Dad

'Cause Dads Love Macaroni, Too!

Macaroni Dog

A little over a month ago our little Macaroni family added a dog.

Not a real dog actually. It is small and black and hairy and for all intents and purposes might actually be a rodent of some kind. It barks...a lot...so I think it is a dog. We had promised MinMac a dog quite some time ago, and although Mac Dad was campaigning for something 100 plus pounds with flapping jowls and bowel movements the size of picnic tables, I was outranked and out voted.

So here it is, small and rat like and all of about 10 pounds soaking wet. Some things are just meant to be because Mini wanted a Dachshund or a Boston Terrier but dad wasn’t going to sell a kidney to pay for something purebred from Germany or England. Leave it to our 9 year old Mini who doesn’t like to follow the rules. One day, in a lesser traveled hallway and behind a wall and a sign that says “Keep Out” our youngest came across a dog that fit the mold at the Humane Society of SLC.

We are still learning about one another and I think her dog instinct to hunt badgers and live off the land is stronger than her sense that likes a good meal, a loving family and a warm pillow to sleep on. Slowly but surely we are learning to appreciate one another.

Macaroni wife so far is not very fond of the newly added dirty footprints and sand that is scraped off a low hanging dog belly that usually grazes the dirt when outside. MiniMac is not entirely fond of the sand in her bed or the bouncing young, spastic puppy that has her wake up time set for 7 am even on the weekends. I am remembering what it is to take walks at night and roll around on the couch while a sharp sabre-toothed rodent bites my toes through my socks. Although tiny, this little creature seems to like her family and has a personality many times her size.

We haven’t had long with our new addition, but the bonds are forming. Having a new dog in the house makes me think more about past dogs I have had in my life and it makes me wonder if we will all be running around in a big field together someday. It has been tough for me as we get more acquainted with our new canine friend to NOT compare her with the personalities and characteristics of loyal friends past. Right now I have MiniMac playing her 3DS and a small black rat-like dog curled up in the blanket near my feet. It has been a while since I’ve enjoyed this warm and unconditional loving-dog relationship, but right now it feels pretty cool.
