Community Members Become Voices for Abused Children

"I Am For The Child" - 19th Circuit Court Guardian ad Litem Program

September 26, 2014
There are approximately 1,200 children on the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee under court supervision because of abuse, abandonment or neglect. The Guardian ad Litem Program is the voice for these vulnerable children within in the child welfare system. Certified GAL volunteers are appointed by the court to represent the child’s best interests.

The Guardian ad Litem Program advocates for 800 children due to the dedication, commitment, and compassion of over 300 volunteers.

There are 400 children still waiting for a caring adult to be their voice. Community members are urgently needed to help fight for the rights and essential needs of these children, to ensure that they will have a safe and permanent home.

Adults at least 21 years of age can become volunteers. Prior experience is not required. Training, support and mentoring are provided. The time commitment is on average 10 – 15 hours a month.

On September 30, 2014, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, there will be an open house and a swearing in ceremony of new Volunteer Child Advocates. Anyone interested in becoming a voice for a child is welcome to attend this special event. It takes place at the GAL office, 584 NW University Blvd, suite 600, Port St. Lucie, 34986.

To apply to become a GAL volunteer or to learn more about the program, interested persons should contact Gail Griffith, Volunteer Recruiter, at 772-871-7225; gail.griffith@gal.fl.gov
