Imagine having the chance to create art with algae, peer inside an active beehive (without getting stung!), and experience explosive chemical reactions all at the same place! The inaugural Indian River Lagoon Science Festival will bring all that and more to the Treasure Coast on Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Museum Pointe Park on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce.
The FREE family-friendly community festival is a celebration of science and aims to show that science is not only meaningful and relevant, but also fun! Exhibitors will have hands-on activities and demonstrations exploring different areas of science, such as agriculture, health science, entomology, ecology, marine science and more!
“We hope the IRL Science Festival broadens people’s ideas of what science is,” shared Laura Diederick, Co-Chair of the Festival. “Science is all around us, all the time, and everyone can be a scientist!”
Highlights of the event include:
- Explosive chemistry stage shows by Miracle of Science at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- Special appearance by Treasure Coast Wildlife Center, featuring live animals, at noon
- Free admission to the St. Lucie County Aquarium and St. Lucie Regional History Center
- Live musical performances by The Sweet Chariots throughout the day
- Food trucks from area vendors
- Free parking at event site and free shuttle from Downtown Fort Pierce
Additionally, there are a number of science-focused events taking place across Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin Counties leading up to the Festival day. For more information on these events, visit the IRL Science Festival website at www.irlsciencefest.org.
“The Treasure Coast is incredibly fortunate to have such a diversity of science and technology resources,” said Festival Co-Chair Cristin Ryan. “The IRL Science Festival and the pre-Festival events are a fantastic way for the community to learn about the wealth of opportunities in our own backyard.”
The IRL Science Festival has been made possible through a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Program in Public Understanding of Science and Technology, as well as donations from the Smithsonian Marine Station, Friends of the Smithsonian Marine Station, FAU Harbor Branch, the Florida Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence, and the generous support of St. Lucie County and Indian River State College.
