Craft Corner - I-Love-You Hand Valentine Keepsake

Macaroni Made

By Amanda Paxton January 31, 2013
This fun craft lets you incorporate a little American Sign Language learning - the hand shape you make in this craft is the ASL sign for "I Love You" - while you capture your young one's hand to create a sweet Valentine's Day keepsake for someone you love.

Materials:
  • Red or Pink Heart shaped paper plates - we purchased ours at Walmart, but you can probably pick some up at any party supply store around this time of year. You can alternatively cut out a heart shape using cardstock.
  • Cream or skin colored construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Glitter Glue or glitter
  • Decorations: buttons, foam hearts, gems, stickers, etc.
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon

Directions:

Trace your child's hand on the construction paper, be sure to have them spread their fingers wide so that it will be easier to fold them down to make the hand shape. Cut out the hand shape.

Glue the hand shape on to the paper plate, leaving the middle and ring fingers free. Fold the middle and ring fingers down and glue the tips to the "palm" of the hand. This would be a nice time to teach your child the ASL sign for I-Love-You and explain how sign language is used instead of words by many people who cannot hear.

Embellish the plate with your decorations. Use a little glitter glue to show the fingernails.

Punch a hole through the top center of the plate and pull your ribbon through, make a bow or tie the ends together to make your decoration easy to hang.

Share it with someone you love and have a great Valentine's Day!
