Proposed School Budget Cuts

January 17, 2013
This week parents of children in Saint Lucie County schools received an extremely important recorded message from School Superintendent Michael Lannon informing us of the agenda for the upcoming school board regular workshop scheduled for Tuesday, January 22nd. It seems revenue for Saint Lucie County Schools has been steadily decreasing. As part of a proactive measure, the school board planned and built up a fund balance to use as a "rainy day" savings account. The fund balance will run out on June 30, 2013 so the district must come up with an "Expenditure Reduction Plan" to cover the 2013-2014 school year. Lannon will discuss the proposed cuts to the annual school budget during the Superintendent's Update portion of the meeting.

We cannot do much about lack of raised revenue that has resulted in the need for spending cuts - the downturn in the economy hit everyone hard and Saint Lucie County, in particular, really got crushed in the recession - however, if you are concerned about the items the school board is proposing to cut, then you should try to attend the meeting and let your voice be heard.

The School Board of Saint Lucie County's Regular Workshop will take place in the School Board Room of the District's offices located at 4204 Okeechobee Road in Fort Pierce. It is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM.
