Morningside Library Offers Summer Teen Program

PORT ST. LUCIE – The Morningside Branch Library is offering a five-week summer teen time program. Designed for students in grades 6th through 12th, this free program takes place Fridays at 2 p.m., starting June 22nd and runs through July 27th.
 
Week 1 – Friday, June 22 at 2 PM – GRIM Society: Paranormal Research and Investigation. Hear about the science behind the research of paranormal occurrences and unusual happenings. Learn the true stories behind supposedly haunted local places such as the Governor’s House; St. Lucie County Regional History Center, Platts-Backus House, Old Fort Park, Oak Hammock and Spruce Bluff.  Plus, don’t miss a cool display of the gadgets and tools used in paranormal research.  

Week 2 – Friday, June 29 at 2 PM  – NASA, Kennedy Space Center. Presented by Jessica Paglialonga, education specialist for NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, participants will learn about robotics and how they are used at NASA, including an activity with brushbots (mini-robots using a tooth brush head, motor and battery).  The program will also include a hovercraft activity, space food and the always exciting “Vacuum Seal a Student” activity. 

Week 3 – Friday, July 13 at 2 PM – Wii Party. Compete with your friends or work as a team at this Wii Party event. With more than a dozen games to choose from, games will be played on two big screen TVs with two Wii systems. Play for fun or compete in tournaments. Prizes will be given to the winners and snacks will be provided.

Week 4 – Friday, July 20 at 2 PM - Interactive Murder Mystery Event: “Death Aboard the Infamous” by Clapping Monkey Productions. The famous “Infamous” pirate ship is well underway. All are in good spirits and enjoying the gorgeous weather...until someone decides to shoot the Captain’s parrot to feathers… and the First Mate too! Enjoy the journey to discover the scurvy mongrel guilty of the heinous crimes. Take on the role of a sleuth as the cast retraces the steps and delivers the clues that will aide you in solving the mystery. At the end of the show, the lucky audience “sleuths” who correctly select the murderer will be part of the show trivia “ceremony” to determine the winner of a $25 gift card. Gift card and program provided by Clapping Monkey Productions.

Week 5 – Friday, July 27 at 2 PM – Zombies in the Library. Come for an afternoon of zombie survival training: Polish your Zombie Target Practice Skills; try to pass the Zombie Survival Kit Challenge; come dressed in your best zombie outfit...and much more.

Door prizes will be offered at each of the programs. Morningside’s summer teen time is sponsored by generous donations from the local community and the Friends of the St. Lucie County Library Book Sale.
