What happens at the Aquarium when the lights go out for the night? The Smithsonian is offering a chance to find out during multiple programs offered this winter. Aquarium After Dark programs include a pizza dinner and brief presentation by Smithsonian education staff, followed by a self-guided exploration of the Aquarium displays with special flashlights. Doors open at 5:45 PM and the program will begin promptly at 6:00 PM.

Program dates include:
  • Friday, December 16, 2016
  • Wednesday, December 28, 2016
  • Friday, January 20, 2017
  • Friday, February 17, 2017
Aquarium After Dark is recommended for adults and children ages 5 and up. The cost is $10 for adults and $8 for children for Aquarium members; nonmember prices are $12 for adults and $10 for children. Advance registration is required as space is limited. To register for either program date, please call 772-465-3271 or email SMSEducation@si.edu.

“Aquarium After Dark gives guests a glimpse at how different the ocean is at night by seeing all of the nocturnal animals out and about in our model ecosystems,” said Jasmine Fox, Marine Biology Educator at the Smithsonian. “Sea cucumbers, sea stars, and urchins are active, while most of the fish are at rest. We’ll also see corals and anemones that fluoresce, or glow, under UV lights.”

The Smithsonian Exhibit, located in the St. Lucie County Aquarium at 420 Seaway Drive on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce, is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Sunday from noon to 4:00 PM and seasonally (January through March) on Monday from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for children and seniors. Annual memberships are available, starting from $15.
